Applications Primer 12-1
Applications Primer 12
Our primary objective is to provide you with data acquisition systems that are easy to install, operate, and
maintain. We also strive to furnish the performance you need at the lowest overall cost. The benefits for you
are increased productivity, data you can count on, and, of course, meeting your budget.
Part of meeting that objective is contained herein. Because the PC is a general purpose tool for data
acquisition applications, we think it helpful to provide you with information for your specific application.
This Applications Handbook gives you a detailed description of how to use our products to complete a
variety of data acquisition tasks.
Data acquisition is divided into two distinct types: ANALOG and DIGITAL. An example of analog data
acquisition is temperature measurement. An example of digital data acquisition is observing the on/off state
of a conveyor belt. Further, data acquisition usually refers to measurement (input) and control (output).
Also, most data acquisition applications have a combination of inputs and outputs, analog and/or digital.
This Handbook covers all of the most common PC data acquisition applications, as well as a few
uncommon applications. If your particular application is not covered here, and you need further assistance,
please contact our technical support department.
We begin with a few generalities regarding sensor connections, followed by more specific examples for
analog applications in Chapter 13, and digital applications in Chapter 14.
Applications Reference
Almost any type of sensor can be connected to Analog Connection data acquisition equipment. For each
type of sensor, a detailed description of the connections and software setup is given. Sensors that are not
listed may be connected as long as they have a voltage or current output.
